The WaterTurtle Guide to Croatia & Montenegro

An Active Adventure Through the Croatian Islands, Split, Dubrovnik, and Montenegro
ISLAND HOPPING • CYCLING • HIKING • MEDIEVAL CITIES • DALMATIAN COAST • MOUNTAINS • LOCAL FOOD
2026 Edition

One Trip. Two Countries. Very Different Experiences.

Croatia and Montenegro pack an incredible amount of adventure into a relatively small corner of Europe.

You can wander through a 1,700-year-old Roman palace in the morning, bicycle across a Croatian island in the afternoon, swim in the Adriatic Sea, explore a medieval walled city, drive one of Europe's most spectacular coastlines and finish the trip hiking high above the mountains and bays of Montenegro.

But figuring out where to go, how long to stay and how to connect it all together takes some work.

That's why I created this guide.

A FIRSTHAND GUIDE — NOT A GENERIC TRAVEL ITINERARY

My wife Kris and I traveled through Croatia and Montenegro in spring 2026, beginning in Split and exploring the Dalmatian Coast and islands before continuing south through Dubrovnik and into Montenegro.

This WaterTurtle Guide is based on that actual trip.

It's not intended to tell you everything there is to know about Croatia and Montenegro.

Instead, it's what I would tell a friend who asked:

"If we had about two weeks and wanted an active trip through Croatia and Montenegro, how would you do it?"

I've taken our firsthand experience — including the places we loved, the logistics that worked, the things I'd change and the lessons we learned along the way — and turned it into a practical itinerary you can use to plan your own trip.

WHAT'S INSIDE THE GUIDE

The WaterTurtle Guide to Croatia & Montenegro takes much of the research out of planning an active Adriatic adventure.

You'll find:

  • A recommended 12–14 day Croatia & Montenegro itinerary

  • How to divide your time between Split, the Croatian islands, Dubrovnik and Montenegro

  • Our experience cycling and exploring six Croatian islands by boat

  • What to see and do in Split and Trogir

  • How I'd spend your time in Dubrovnik

  • How to explore the spectacular Bay of Kotor

  • Where to stay and how to move between destinations

  • Rental-car and border-crossing considerations

  • The hikes, bike rides and outdoor experiences I'd prioritize

  • Restaurants and food experiences we enjoyed

  • What to pack

  • What I'd do differently

  • Shorter itinerary options if you don't have two weeks

  • WaterTurtle's 10 Croatia & Montenegro Essentials

  • Links and resources to help you book and plan the trip

THIS GUIDE IS FOR YOU IF...

You like trips that combine adventure with culture.

You'd rather bike across an island than sit beside a hotel pool all day.

You enjoy hiking, photography, local restaurants, historic towns and scenic drives.

You want enough planning to make the trip run smoothly — without joining a traditional guided tour where every hour of your vacation has already been decided for you.

And most importantly, you like traveling independently.

That's the WaterTurtle approach.

THE WATERTURTLE APPROACH

There are thousands of articles online telling you the "20 Best Things to Do in Croatia."

This isn't one of them.

WaterTurtle Guides are built around actual trips and firsthand experience.

People ask me to just tell them where to go and what to do since they don't have time to do the research.

I tell you where we went, what we did, what was worth the time, what surprised us, what I'd skip or change and how I'd plan the trip if I were doing it again.

The goal isn't to give you 100 possibilities.

It's to help you make better decisions with less time to research.
